MEMORANDUM ON CHRISTMAS ATTACKS

Hon’ble Smt Draupadi Murmu,
PRESIDENT OF INDI

31st December 2025

Respected Rashtrapatiji,

Sub: Christmas attacks on Christians

Namaskar! I respectfully place before you some of the legitimate fears and apprehensions of the Christian community in India. It is common knowledge that the pro-rata contribution of the Christian community to the nation in the realm of education, health and social service is second to none.

What is not so commonly known is the number of gallantry and Vishisht Sewa awards won by the members of the community – be it Paramvir Chakra, Mahavir Chakra, Vir Chakra, Sena, Nausena and Vayusena medals and PVSM/AVSM/VSM awards. In 1950 the very first Mahavir Chakra was awarded posthumously to Sqn Ldr Sidney Noronha of Goa. In the latest Operation Sindoor a Kirti Chakra was awarded to Captain Sailo of Mizoram. The Indian Christian community takes legitimate pride in its record of selfless service to the nation.

It has also been in the vanguard of promoting Hindi and other regional languages, by missionaries like Padmabhushan Baba Camille Bulcke SJ and Rev William Carey.

Despite this impeccable record we are being increasingly viewed with suspicion and treated with hostility. The New Delhi based United Christian Forum, a pan-India organisation has recorded 834 attacks on Christians in 2024 and 706 incidents upto November of this year. This is an alarming situation. Enough is enough.

These orchestrated attacks by religious fanatics and self-styled vigilantes have exceeded all limits of human decency in the run up to Christmas this year. Attacks were reported across the country – Jabalpur in M.P., Gaziabad in U.P., Lajpatnagar in New Delhi, Raipur in Chhatisgarh, Nalbari in Assam, Palakkad in Kerala, Bareilly in U.P., Jhabua in M.P. etc.

A further shock was the cancellation of Christmas as a holiday for Govt schools in U.P. This, despite the fact that Christmas is an occasion that children especially look forward to. Elsewhere a ban was imposed on something as petty as Santa Claus caps, even though it is a largely secular tradition! These growing acts of vandalism at Christmas time have even drawn the attention of the foreign media in various countries like Dubai, Turkiye, U.K. etc; thereby bringing shame on the country in the comity of nations. In a media driven world, no action goes unnoticed.

This atmosphere of intolerance of the “other” is no longer limited to minority communities like Christians and Muslims. The most recent racist attacks were on a student from Tripura in Dehradun in Uttrakhand and on a Odiya migrant worker in Tamilnadu. An atmosphere of communal hatred and racial intolerance is raging across the country. It has become the new “normal”. This bodes ill for the future of our country that seeks to project itself as a Vishwaguru (World Leader).

Mere attendance of the Prime Minister at some Christian events, without condemnation of the violence and hatred, appear to be no more than photo ops, that further rub salt into raw wounds.

As our Honourable President and guardian of the Constitution of our secular country we request you to take cognizance of these events and direct the governments at the Centre and the States to take immediate steps to prevent such acts of communal violence and racial hatred to preserve the honour and dignity of the Motherland.

We thank you in anticipation of your kind action. JAI HIND!

For INDIAN CATHOLIC FORUM,

chhotebhai

It’s very sad that a country that prides itself as the most vibrant and having diverse faiths, culture and traditions is heading towards a very dangerous path of intolerance and hate .

On what grounds do we claim to be secular? Acts of violence against any community declare that some can take the law in their own hands and get away with it.

It’s disgusting to see Hindutva forces clamping down on a harmless festival that can only make India a better place. When people connect in love peace and harmony, India can be a beautiful place where people prosper and joy is everywhere.

I support this petition. Things are totally out of control and the secular fabric of this country is destroyed. Immediate intervention by the government needed.
Because of these fringe / fanatic elements, some of my close Hindu friends themselves feel they are in danger due to these actions.

I am very upset about these attacks on the people of Christian faith during one of the important feast days of the year. It shows the insecurity of those who indulge in these attacks. If the administration wants, they can stop these incidents by public video clips similar to the warnings about cyber attacks. If action is taken and is publicises then other such frings elements will be put on notice.

    Respected Rashtrapati Madam,

The incidents of attack and vandalism which Chhotebhai has raised are very alarming indeed, purely from the standpoint of India’s secular image of being the melting pot of all religions and cultures. I fully endorse Chhotebhai’s view who is a towering and conscientious social worker.

The Constitution of India guarantees freedom of practising and propagating, without hindrance, one’s religion, subject to maintaining public order. Christians always maintain public order whenever they celebrate their festivals and take part in their prayer services. So why are they being persecuted in MP, Chattisgarh, Orissa and Uttar Pradesh? Being only 2.3% they are the minority of all minorities. What is the need for the Majority Community outfits (VHP, Bajrang Dal and others) to browbeat/physically assault/vandalise them?

Therefore, it’s high time the powers that be woke up under your exemplary leadership.

Let us not misconstrue the idea of Hindutva as Indian Nationalism. Indian Christians are as notionalistic, if not more, than the handful of hooligans beating the oft-quoted Sanatan chants.
Why would a church service in Mumbai’s historic, 300-year-old St. Thomas’ Cathedral inaugurating the Christmas season start with the church choir singing the National Anthem?
Or the Catholic churches across the country celebrate with a special service on every Independence Day praying for our country and hoisting the national flag within the church comound ?
Or celebrate New Year’s day with a church service praying for God’s blessings on our leaders to steer our beloved country to greater glory?
Why would the monks of Ramakrishna mission across Bengal offer special prayers and sing carols on Christmas Day?

It is time for the leaders and policy makers of our country to take cognizance of such atrocities pelted on Christian clergy, nuns and laity in the name of Sanatan Dharma and strongly condem such acts of senseless violence, as the holy scriptures do not subscribe to such practices.

Her Excellency, Honourable President Madam ji, please exercise your immense empathy and wisdom to stop these violent attacks on Churches schools and Christians, These violence, under any guise is to be identified, stopped and punished.

I wish you and members of your presedential staff, Joyous blessings of the Christmas season of Love.

    Lucile Kuriakose,
    03/02/2026.

India being a secular country , and when we it’s citizens are so proud of its unity in diversity, it is extremely disturbing to see that a group of people are vandalising and destroying the sacred images in recent times specially during this Christmas festival. The attack took place in various places in India and it is shocking to see the government takes no actions against the goons. It is our humble request to take action against the antisocial elements of our country. Christmas is a festival that spreads love, peace, joy and unity and the recent vandalism that took place during this Christmas is unacceptable. Our honourable President it is our earnest request to take serious action against the goons that disturb the peace of the nation attacking Christians in various ways. We want the freedom to practice our religion and to celebrate our religious festivals in peace.
